Always a nature lover, I
spent many hours of my childhood searching for Lunar Moths. I read that they could be attracted by smearing mashed rotten
banana’s onto the bark of a tree. Lunar Moths would swarm to this feast in the moonlight. Lunar moths are nocturnal.
Night after night I would stake out my tree. Day after day, I would beg rotten bananas from the local Red and White Supermarket.
I never did see a single Lunar Moth. As I grew older, I forgot about this quest.
Then one moonlight night
shortly after I came to New Durham, I went to the back yard to look at the stars (a novelty for city dwellers). The back porch
had one large bright light but that did not interfere with star gazing. Out of the blackness came a swarm of Lunar Moths.
There were hundreds of them. No camera could have captured the beauty. There was no one to share the moment. It was just a
few moments in time etched forever into my mind. A childhood fantasy come to life. New Durham
nights can hold surprises.
